The 04 Day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu – Salkantay trek 4 days is the second most visited place in being more visited after Machu Picchu. It has incredible typical landscapes of the Andes because such beauty must be enjoyed in a unique and exclusive way. Certainly, this route offers us different landscapes since on the way we will pass through snow-capped mountains, cloud forests and we will feel the climate changes of the altitudinal floors in the course. Likewise, as well as we will also pass through small Andean communities. It is aimed at those people who love nature, they will like to feel the tranquility and be in contact with it.

Itinerary

DAY 1: CUSCO – SORAYPAMPA – SUYROCCOCHA

Firstly, we will leave Cusco very early at 04:00 a.m., the trip will last approximately 03 hours to the town of Mollepata. On the way, we will pass through different microclimates and altitudes, such as the town of Limatambo, known for its avocados.
After taking breakfast briefly, we will continue to the Community of Soraypampa, where we will begin our trek.
So, we will continue approximately 03 hours to Salkantaypampa (4,000 meters / 13,123 ft.), we will have lunch under the massive Salkantay glacier.
After resting, we continue our trip to our camp in Suyroccocha (4,400 meters / 14,435 ft.), we will settle for the night right at the foot of Salkantay.
Finally, weather permitting, we will have a night constellation show with a show of constellations.

DAY 2: SUYROCCOCHA – SALKANTAY PASS – HUAYRACMACHAY – CHAULLAY

A beautiful Andean sunrise will wake up. So, we will begin our ascent of approximately 1 hour to the Salkantay pass (4,650 meters / 15,255 ft.).
Likewise, at this point the sights are spectacular, surrounded by glaciers and the view of the valley below. With some luck, we will observe local birds and mammals along the way.
Our lunch will be in the community of Huayraqmachay, in the elevations near the glacier.
After that, we will descend and feel the abrupt change in climate as we will enter the cloud forest.
Consequently, after 4 hours, we will reach Collpapampa (2,920 meters / 9,580 ft.), the weather is more tropical and full of wildlife.
We will camp near the river and in the forest.

DAY 3: COLLPAPAMPA – SAYAHUACO – HYDROELECTRIC – AGUAS CALIENTES

Firstly, we will have a nutritious and delicious breakfast in the morning.
Likewise, we continue our journey through the dense vegetation of the high Andean jungle and the fruit fields. The most common fruits are bananas, coffee, avocados, and cacao.
We will stop for lunch in the community of Sayahuaco (2,000 meters / 6,462 feet).
Next, we will make a short trip by car to the hydroelectric station.
From Hidroelectrica, we will continue by foot to “Aguas Calientes” (2,040 meters / 6,692 ft.) around 03 hours.
As a result, in “Aguas Calientes”, we will settle in our hotel and then go for dinner at a local restaurant.

NOTE: It is optional to take a short train ride here instead of walking for an additional cost of $31.

DAY 4: MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO (B)

This is the most important day, we will visit one of the wonders of the world, the imposing “Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu”.
After our breakfast, we will board the bus that will take us to Machu Picchu, where we will receive the first rays of the sun at dawn while illuminates the magical city.
So, the guided tour of the National Shrine will last approximately 02 hours.
Likewise, in the afternoon, we will return to “Aguas Calientes” for lunch, before taking the train that will take us back to Ollantaytambo.
In Ollantaytambo, our private transport will take us back to Cusco to drop you off at your respective hotel.

Is the trek difficult? Do I need to be in good physical condition?

All our treks (Inka Trail, Salkantay, Ausangate, Lares, etc) are moderately difficult, lengthy and traverse rough mountain terrain. We kindly recommend that if you plan to conquer any of these routes machu picchu travel to be in relatively good physical condition, plus acclimatization.

How far in advance should I acclimatize for the salkantay trek to machu picchu?

Most of our main meals are a buffet-style, leaving you the option to avoid anything undesirable to you.

If there are any food items or veggies that you cannot stomach, perhaps onions, tomatoes, mushrooms.. etc, upon your request we will ask our chef to leave them out or separate this item.

We can also attend lactose-intolerant or gluten-intolerant diets. We cannot accept individuals with serious allergic or life-threatening reactions.

I have a food allergy. May I still participate?

Certainly, Every day we receive many clients with food allergies to nuts, wheat, etc. Please inform us in detail of your condition upon making your reservation.

Therefore, We kindly ask that you declare the severity of your reaction and any medication that you take in case of emergency.

However, If your allergy is severe, we ask that you be accompanied by a friend or individual conscious and fully responsible of your situation and ready with any medication.

When must I arrive in cusco or arrive to your office?

We require that all clients arrive to Cusco at least 48 hours before the start of your salkantay trek tours, although 03 nights before is ideal. Certainly, You must pay your remaining balance two days before your departure for your salkantay trek 4 days. This will assure that all individuals are acclimatized and adjusted to the high altitude conditions to begin your trek comfortably. Please note that your remaining balance must be paid in cash in our office and cannot be paid before your arrival.

What are the office hours – salkantay trek tours?

Certainly, our office hours are Monday – Saturday 9:00am – 1:00pm, 4:00pm – 8:00pm. (Please aim to arrive 7:30pm at the latest!)

Are hiking sticks or poles necessary?

For this trek more than any other, we do recommend hiking sticks, especially for those with any known knee problems. The poles will assist your balance and reduce the impact on your knees.

Where can I store my baggage that I dont need for the trail?

Any baggage that is not necessary for your trek may be stored in your hotel in Cusco (most hotels offer this service free of charge). In the case that your hotel may not provide this service, we will store your baggage safely in our office free of charge.

What is the weather like during the trek?

Most importantly, The best time for making the salkantay trek to machu picchu with good weather is between the months of April – October when there is minimal rainfall and clear skies. Therefore, The driest months are June – August, which is winter in the Andes.

When is the rainy season in Cusco?

In the same vein, January to March is summer in Peru, which means rainy season for Cusco and especially the salkantay trek 4 days, which is located mostly in the tropical cloud forest.

Where do I have to be the morning of the start of my trek and where will I finish at the end?
