Peru Goes All In On Sustainable Tourism: Choquequirao cable car to cut travel time from two days to 20 minutes

In a strong effort to boost tourism in the Cusco region, the Peruvian government officially announced the construction of the Choquequirao cable car, an emblematic project that aims to position this archaeological site as a major tourist attraction. The total investment for the project amounts to $261 million, to be executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

What benefits will the Choquequirao cable car bring?

Currently, reaching this Inca citadel requires a four-day trek through stunning natural landscapes. With the implementation of the cable car, travel time will be drastically reduced to just 20 minutes.

The Choquequirao cable car will be the first large-scale aerial cable transport system of its kind in Peru, spanning more than 6 miles (10 kilometers). This modern infrastructure will significantly improve access to the archaeological complex and is expected to attract over one million visitors per year.

The project will not only facilitate tourism but also generate a major economic impact. It is estimated that it could inject more than $105 million (S/400 million) annually in revenue, directly benefiting the surrounding regions.

This archaeological site will soon become more accessible, reducing travel time and promoting sustainable tourism in the Andes.

Who participated in the project launch?

During the project’s presentation ceremony, President Dina Boluarte, Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism Desilú León, and Executive Director of ProInversión Luis Del Carpio were in attendance. Regional authorities from Cusco and Apurímac, along with provincial and district mayors from both regions, also participated.

In her remarks, Minister Desilú León highlighted that this megaproject represents the government’s commitment to developing tourism as a driver of growth for local communities.

What are the contributions of this project?

The cable car is expected to help strengthen the Southern Tourist Circuit, one of the most important in the country. This circuit integrates iconic destinations such as Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Ollantaytambo, the Salkantay Mountain, and Humantay Lagoon in Cusco, as well as the Ampay National Sanctuary and the Saywite Archaeological Site in Apurímac.

What are the next steps for authorities and investors?

ProInversión has launched a public tender, both national and international, to select a strategic partner responsible for executing the project. The bidding process is expected to take place during the last quarter of 2025.

At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR), through the Plan Copesco Nacional, will improve the access roads, strengthening trekking services and benefiting nearby communities.

What other initiatives is the government leading?

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism is also leading other key projects in different regions of the country. These include the “Arequipa Tourism – Colca Valley Program” with an investment of $87 million (S/330 million); the “Northern Beaches Tourism Project” with $342 million (S/1.3 billion); and the Macro North Tourist Corridor, with an investment exceeding $210 million (S/800 million), which includes the regions of Cajamarca, Amazonas, Lambayeque, and San Martín.
