Machu Picchu will feature 3D maps: Virtual reality technology is now part of tourism management.
To ensure the conservation and safety of Machu Picchu, the Ministry of Culture of Peru, in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Futaba Inc., has developed a pilot project to create high-precision 3D topographic maps of the Archaeological Complex. This initiative aims to produce detailed blueprints, implement risk prevention measures, develop virtual reality maps, and build digital archives and conservation plans.
This project, in which Machu Picchu will feature 3D maps, is not only intended to improve the preservation of the site but also to strengthen tourism management and guarantee the safety and comfort of visitors who travel from all over the world to experience this cultural heritage wonder.
What are the goals now that Machu Picchu will feature 3D maps?
The main goal of this project is to record the monuments of the Inca citadel with high precision, allowing experts to gain a detailed understanding of Machu Picchu through advanced technology, especially by creating 3D plans. Among the most important benefits are:
- Development of detailed topographic plans: This will provide an accurate and updated record of the Inca citadel and its surrounding mausoleums, which is essential for long-term conservation.
- Creation of 3D models and virtual reality maps: The production of 3D models will make it possible to conduct deeper studies of the site’s structure, helping specialists better preserve its buildings.

How will this project be implemented, and which institutions are responsible for its execution?
The project stems from an agreement signed in October 2024 between the Ministry of Culture of Peru, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and Futaba Inc. Implementation began in April 2025. The first actions included surveys of several key sectors of Machu Picchu, such as Intipunku, Intihuatana, Wayna Picchu, and the surrounding terraces. All these activities aim to record the archaeological site’s features with maximum accuracy.
The project will be carried out in stages, and once completed, the collaborators will donate a 3D recording device to the Decentralized Directorate of Culture (DDC) of Cusco. This donation will allow specialists to continue recording and conserving the historic sanctuary using state-of-the-art technology.

It is essential for the staff to be properly trained to continuously manage and update the 3D records, ensuring the site’s sustainable preservation. Furthermore, by 2026, the results of the project are expected to be presented through public events organized by Peruvian and Japanese authorities.
