A Machu Picchu ticket does not provide unrestricted access to the entire archaeological site. The route printed on your ticket determines the viewpoints, archaeological sectors or mountain trails you can visit, so choosing the right circuit matters just as much as securing the date.

Tickets are limited by route, date and entry time.

Machu Picchu ticket prices in 2026

For foreign visitors, the standard published Machu Picchu entrance tariff is S/152 (about US$45) for adults, S/77 (about US$23) for eligible students, and S/70 (about US$21) for children ages 3–17. Mountain and selected special routes have a higher published tariff of S/200 (about US$60) for foreign adults.

Important note: The dollar amounts are approximate because the official tariffs are established in Peruvian soles. Your final card charge can vary slightly according to the exchange rate used by your bank or payment provider.

The Ministry of Culture confirmed on September 8, 2026 that no modification to the Machu Picchu entrance tariff had been approved. Any future tariff change should therefore be confirmed through an official Ministry of Culture announcement and the amount displayed on TuBoleto before payment.

When to buy Machu Picchu tickets?

There is no universal rule that every traveler must buy exactly three, four or six months in advance. The correct timing depends on your travel dates, preferred route and flexibility.

If your itinerary is fixed, buy once the route and time you want are officially available rather than waiting until trains and hotels have already been locked in.

Demand is particularly important for:

• June through August.
• Holiday periods.
• Routes with mountain access.
• Travelers with only one possible Machu Picchu date.
• Visitors who need a specific entry time to coordinate trains or transfers.

2026 capacity and high-demand dates

The Ministry of Culture authorized a maximum capacity of up to 5,600 visitors per day on specific dates in 2026:

• January 1.
• April 2–5.
• June 19–November 2.
• December 30–31.

That figure is a maximum authorized capacity, not a guarantee that 5,600 tickets will operate every day.

Important note:

In early September 2026, Cultura Cusco reported an operating capacity of 4,044 visitors per day. This can coexist with the higher 5,600 maximum authorized for designated dates because actual operating capacity can be lower than the legal seasonal maximum.

Machu Picchu ticket documents, changes and refunds

Identification documents

Use the identification document requested during the reservation process and bring it with you when entering Machu Picchu.

• Foreign visitors: use the passport or accepted official identification requested by TuBoleto.
• Peruvian visitors: use the corresponding national identification document.
• Minors: travel with the identification documentation required for their age and nationality.
• Students: carry the documentation used to qualify for the student fare.

Student ticket requirements

The reduced student tariff applies only to travelers who meet the official higher-education eligibility requirements.

Do not assume that an ISIC card alone automatically qualifies you for the official discount. Follow the documentation requirements displayed by TuBoleto and bring the valid student credential used for the reservation.

Ticket changes and corrections

Machu Picchu tickets are linked to the visitor, date and entry time. Ordinary changes to the visitor name or visit date should not be assumed to be available after purchase.

Check your route, personal details, date and time carefully before completing payment.

If an identification-document number needs to be corrected for the same traveler, use the procedure indicated by the Ministry of Culture rather than purchasing under another person’s identity.

Refunds and exceptional circumstances

If you simply miss the date or time printed on your ticket, you should not expect a refund.

Exceptional circumstances outside the traveler’s control can lead the Ministry of Culture to establish special procedures for reprogramming or refunds, but those measures depend on the official situation and should not be treated as a normal cancellation policy.

Machu Picchu circuits and routes in 2026

The official system organizes visits through three circuits that group 10 routes. Each route provides a different experience, and visitors must remain on the route assigned to their ticket.

Where to buy official Machu Picchu tickets?

Online through TuBoleto

The official online sales platform is TuBoleto.cultura.pe, operated through the Peruvian Ministry of Culture.

The older Joinnus information still found in some travel articles should not be used as the current purchasing process.

When buying online, select:

• Llaqta Machupicchu.
• Your circuit and route.
• Visit date.
• Entry time.
• Visitor category.
• Nationality or applicable place of residence.

Check every detail before payment because the ticket is tied to the visitor and the selected visit conditions.

Buying in Machu Picchu Pueblo

The Ministry of Culture currently makes up to 1,000 tickets per day available for in-person purchase at the Cultural Center in Machu Picchu Pueblo.

According to the latest operational information published by Cultura Cusco, visitors can currently purchase available tickets for entry on the same day. From 2:00 p.m., tickets can also be purchased for the following day.

These tickets are limited by the remaining circuits, routes and time slots. Arriving in Aguas Calientes does not guarantee that the route you want will still be available.

Pro tip:

If your flights, hotels and trains are already fixed, secure the Machu Picchu ticket before finalizing the rest of your timed services. In-person availability is useful as a backup, but it gives you less control over the route and entry time.

Buying through a travel agency

An authorized travel agency can coordinate the reservation with trains, the Aguas Calientes bus, guides, hotels and other timed services.

Whether you buy independently or through an agency, confirm:

• Full name exactly as shown on your identification document.
• Passport or identification number.
• Nationality.
• Date of birth.
• Selected circuit and route.
• Visit date.
• Entry time.

Arrive for your assigned entry time

Your ticket has a specific admission time. Coordinate trains, the shuttle bus and walking time so you reach the entrance with enough margin.

Do not plan your visit on the assumption that you can arrive at any time later in the day.

Stay on your assigned route

The three circuits and 10 routes are designed to manage visitor movement and reduce pressure on sensitive archaeological areas.

You cannot simply move into another circuit because a viewpoint or structure appears nearby.

Tour guides at Machu Picchu

Older travel information sometimes states that a guide is mandatory for every visitor. Current official regulations recommend being accompanied by a tourism guide rather than establishing a universal guide requirement for every independent visitor.

A licensed guide can still add significant value by explaining the archaeological context, helping you understand the route and coordinating the pace of the visit.

Prohibited items and behavior

Important restrictions inside Machu Picchu include:

• Bags or backpacks larger than 40 × 35 × 20 cm (16 × 14 × 8 in).
• Food and food-service items.
• Alcohol or illegal substances.
• Tripods, monopods, selfie sticks and similar camera extensions.
• Pets, except guide dogs.
• Aerosols.
• Drones and other unauthorized aircraft.
• Smoking, vaping or making fire.
• Running or creating disorder.
• Climbing, leaning on or damaging archaeological structures.
• Leaving the established circuit or route.
• Removing or disturbing flora, fauna or archaeological material.

Violations can result in removal from Machu Picchu without reimbursement and may lead to additional action depending on the offense.

What to do if Machu Picchu tickets are sold out?

First check whether your preferred route is sold out or whether every route is unavailable. A different circuit may still have tickets, but only choose it if that route delivers the experience you actually want.

If online availability is exhausted, the daily allocation of up to 1,000 in-person tickets in Machu Picchu Pueblo can provide another option.

Current operations allow those tickets to be sold for same-day admission when space remains and for next-day admission later in the day. Availability is still limited, so do not travel to Machu Picchu Pueblo assuming a ticket is guaranteed.

If your dates are flexible, also check another day before changing your entire itinerary.
