DAY 1: CUSCO - PITUMARCA - ANANTA

Highlight of the day: You will climb the Pucaccocha Pass and observe the majestic Ausangate and its stunning glacier lakes.

The tour starts early when we pick you up from your hotel by our private transportation at approximately 4:00 a.m. Then, you will travel towards Pitumarca for about 2 hours, and finally arrive at Quesiauno town. This is the place where you start the Rainbow Mountain 2 Day Trek.

While we get ready, our chef will prepare a nutritious breakfast that will give you the necessary energy to face today’s challenge, the Puccacocha pass.

Before begin the trek you should pay close attention to your guide, who must share with you all the details of today’s itinerary, as well as safety tips for the entire tour.

We will begin our trek through the typical puna grassland landscapes in southern Cusco and, at distance, you could see the snowcapped Ausangate which is the highest mountain in Cusco; we will continue until we reach the first pass, known as Puka Pass at 4,870 m.a.s.l./15,977 ft. At this point it is possible to observe a breathtaking lanscape of the crystal clear waters of the Puccaqocha Lake, after a short rest we will walk downhill to Anantapata, where we will have a delicious lunch.

Finally, before sunset, we will descend to our campsite near Surineqocha. Later you will have a delicious dinner and a well-deserved rest.

The long awaited day has arrived! We will wake up early to enjoy a nutritious breakfast, because today we will reach our tour goal: Rainbow Mountain!

After breakfast, you will trek from our camp to Rainbow Mountain. We will start the ascent, and as we rise in altitude, the scenery will become even more spectacular. After trekking for a couple hours, we will reach the summit of Warmisaya at 4,985 m.a.s.l./16,354 ft., at this point it is possible to see Rainbow Mountain for the first time.

Immediately, you will descend to Rainbow Mountain, where we will have time to walk around and take pictures of this unique mountain. After marvelling here, we will continue trekking for approximately 30 minutes until we reach the impressive Red Valley. Its clay soils give an intense red tone to the terrain, creating an incomparable contrast.

At noon, we will start our descent to the point where our private vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Cusco. But first we will make one last stop to enjoy a delicious lunch.

With our hearts full of beautiful and wonderful memories of Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley, we’ll return to Cusco city! This adventure will remain forever in your memory.

What is the Rainbow Mountain 2 Day Trek?

It is a short trek where you will admire Rainbow Mountain, a geological formation characterised by its vibrant colours including reddish, green, yellow, grey and white tones.

You will walk along trekking trails to observe this amazing nature spectacle at firsthand.

Also, you will explore the Red Valley by the Rainbow Mountain 2 Day Trek tour, an otherworldly attraction characterised by soils and rock formations coloured with deep reddish tones. The contrast of the red colours with the dry grassland and blue sky is truly impressive.

Before starting the Rainbow Mountain 2 Day Trek, how many days is it advisable to arrive to acclimatise to high altitude?

We require that all clients arrive in Cusco a minimum of two days before the start of the 7 Colours Mountain and Red Valley Tour. This will also ensure that you can acclimatise to the altitude and start the tour comfortably.

Remember that acclimatization is an important factor if you would not have problems walking at high altitudes and prevent altitude sickness.

When is the recommended season for the Rainbow Mountain 2 Day Trek?

It is advisable to do the Rainbow Mountain 2 Day Trek during the dry season or less rainfall in the Cusco region, which is from April to October, and from June to August are the best months to visit South Peru.

  • April – May: This is the beginning of the dry season, and the rain is rare. The weather is quite pleasant with sunny days.
  • June – August: These are the driest months, there is almost no rain and the weather is hot, with sunny days and cold nights. These are the ideal months for trekking and visiting outdoor attractions.
  • September – October: These are still dry months, but there may be some concurrent rains at afternoon. The weather becomes wetter.
  • November – March: This is the rainy season, with frequent and sometimes torrential rainfall, especially between December to February.
Where does the Rainbow Mountain 2 Day Trek tour start and end?

The Rainbow Mountain 2 Day Trek tour starts and ends at your hotel in Cusco. If your hotel is within the downtown area, it would not have additional transportation charges.

However, if your hotel is located outside the Downtown area, an extra charge will be applied for pickingyou up and droping you off. As a result, we can pick you up from the Main Square or surrounding area to avoid this additional cost.

Don’t forget to let us know in advance if you are staying in a hotel outside the downtown area.

What is the minimum age for the Rainbow Mountain 2 Day Trek tour?

The minimum recommended age is 12 years old, with parents’ permission. This tour is not recommended for children younger than 12 because it is a high-adventure activity. Minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult throughout the tour.

Are the departure dates for the Rainbow Mountain 2 Day Trek tour guaranteed and what is the minimum number of people to book a group?

We understand your concern about guaranteed departure dates. Only in extreme cases of dangerous weather conditions or natural disasters may we be forced to delay the departure date for safety reasons. Apart from these exceptional cases, your tour date is 100% guaranteed.

We require a minimum of 2 people to guarantee departure.

Why do I need to pay a deposit to book the Rainbow Mountain 2 Day Trek tour?

The initial deposit allows us to guarantee all the necessary services for your Rainbow Mountain Trek tour. This includes:

  • Entrance fees to archaeological sites, which must be paid in advance.

Where could I store my unnecessary luggage before to start the Rainbow Mountain 2 Day Trek tour?

Most hotels in Cusco provide free luggage storage to guests. You can leave your extra luggage at your hotel reception before departure date.

If your hotel does not offer this service, we will gladly store your extra luggage safely during the Rainbow Mountain 2 Day Trek tour in our office.

Is it possible to change the departure date after booking the Rainbow Mountain 2 Day Trek tour?

Yes, it is possible to change the date of your tour at least 72 hours in advance of the originally booked date without additional costs.

However, you should contact your travel agent to avoid any inconvenience with the up dates chosen.

Do I need a Visa to enter Peru?

With some exceptions, people from many countries do not need a visa to enter Peru as tourists.

Tourists can stay between 30 and 90 days. The actual length of stay is determined by the “Superintendencia Nacional de Migraciones”.

What happens if I lose my migration card or VISA before starting the Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain Trek?

Be careful not to lose your tourist card, or you will have to queue at the Superintendecia Nacional de Migraciones (migration office), also known as “Migraciones” to get a replacement card. It is an excellent idea to carry your passport and TAM with you at all times, especially when travelling in remote areas, for example, it is required on the Inca Trail.

For security reasons, make a photocopy of both documents and keep them separate from the originals.

Do I need travel insurance for the Rainbow Mountain 2 Day Trek Tour?
