Camino Inca corto a Machu Picchu Wiñayhuayna inca trail

Today is a very special day, because we will start our new adventure on the short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and its surroundings.

Early in the morning, a transportation company will pick you up from your hotel (the pick-up time depends on the train departure time and your hotel location). Then, our first destination is the Ollantaytambo train station, here we will take the train to km 104 also known as Chachabamba (2,200 m.a.s.l./7,218 ft); the average travel time to km 104 is one hour.

Once we reach km 104 (2,200 m.a.s.l./7,218 ft) we will start the short Inca Trail. I must say when you arrive at the checkpoint you will have to present your identification documents (passport, foreigner’s card, or identity card) to the park rangers. Subsequently, fifteen minutes from the starting point of the hike we will visit the archaeological Chachabamba site (2200 m.a.s.l./7,218 ft), this beautiful place is located inside the semi-tropical forest.

After exploring these sites, we will continue ascending through stairs, and rich vegetation. Along this route, we will witness an impressive waterfall and beautiful South American orchids. After 4 hours of hiking, we will arrive at Wiñaywayna (2,650 m.a.s.l./8,694 ft), a fascinating, and historically significant archaeological site in the short Inca trail. As a result, we will enjoy the visit for about 1 hour and then revitalize ourselves with a great box lunch.

After a restful stop at Wiñaywayna (2,680 m.a.s.l./8,792 ft), we will return the hike for an additional 2 hours, passing by stone stairways and “Tambos” until we reach Inti Punku, the Sun Gate (2,720 m.a.s.l./8,924 ft). This place used to function as an access control point to the Machu Picchu citadel and offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Machu Picchu and the picturesque surrounding valley.

Then we will descend for approximately 30 minutes to the wonder of the world, Machu Picchu (2,490 m / 8,169 ft), we will have a privileged view of the “Llaqta”. Finally, we will take the bus to Aguas Calientes (2,160 m.a.s.l./7,087 ft) for 25 minutes. Here we will spend the night in a 3 star hotel.

Furthermore, If you still have energy, you can choose to visit the thermal baths which are only 15 minutes away from the town, at a cost of 10 soles. In addition, Aguas Calientes offers a wide variety of bars and restaurants, as well as ATMs to withdraw money in emergency cases.

Absolutely yes. It is worth it if you are an adventurous person, looking for an experience on an Inca trail, looking for exciting landscapes, looking to reach Machu Picchu in a different way, or looking to see Machu Picchu twice!

What is the short Inca Trail?

The Short Inca Trail is a 2 days tour. It allows you to walk along the original Inca trails, see archaeological sites along the way, learn about the flora and fauna of these mountains and reach Machu Picchu in an unforgettable way.

What is the difference between the 2 Day Inca Trail hike and other Inca Trail versions?

The 2 Day short Inca Trail Tour is shorter than the Classic Inca Trail. It still allows you to experience the beauty of the trail, and to reach Machu Picchu in a unique and special form, because it is the only tour that shows Machu Picchu Llaqta twice; the first time passing beside the Guard’s house leading to Aguas Calientes, and the second time during the guided tour.

How hard is the short Inca Trail?

The short Inca trail is not very difficult. The important thing you should keep in mind is that, you are doing a moderate to difficult grade hike on the first day. On the second day, the situation is different because you are going to only hike in Machu Picchu site.

With cloudy and clear skies the weather can change from warm to cool. If it rains, it is usually cold at higher altitudes. Please, do not forget, wear appropriate clothing to prevent bad experiences.

No, during the first day’s walk there are no places to charge electronic devices until you reach the Aguas Calientes town. To avoid this problem, we recommend that you bring extra camera batteries or powerbanks.

Can I buy food and souvenirs on the way?

Of course you can, Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes are great places to buy food and souvenirs. Also, consider that with your purchase you help local people’s economy. I must say that from km 104 to Aguas Calientes there are no food or souvenir.
