YOUR JOURNEY, DAY BY DAY
Explore the route and the details of each stage of your experience.
DAY 1 OF 4
Descend from Capuliyoc into the Apurímac Canyon, crossing contrasting Andean landscapes before your first night under canvas.
We pick you up at your hotel in Cusco for the approximately four-hour road journey to Capuliyoc, the starting point of the Choquequirao trail. We stop for breakfast before meeting our guide, cooks, muleteers and pack animals. Breakfast on Day 1 is not included, so please bring money for this stop.
The trek begins at Capuliyoc (9,482 ft / 2,890 m), with wide views over the Apurímac Canyon. We descend toward Chiquisca (6,234 ft / 1,900 m), where we have lunch, then continue to Playa Rosalinas (4,921 ft / 1,500 m) beside the Apurímac River. From this low point, we climb toward our campsite in the Santa Rosa area (6,463 ft / 1,970 m).
Our team prepares dinner at the campsite. Rest well: the ascent toward Marampata and Choquequirao comes the following day.
DAY 2 OF 4
Climb to Marampata and explore Choquequirao's terraces and Llamas of the Sun mosaics with your local guide.
After breakfast at Santa Rosa (6,463 ft / 1,970 m), we begin the demanding climb toward Marampata (9,514 ft / 2,900 m). The canyon opens into mountain panoramas, and from Marampata you can begin to appreciate the setting of Choquequirao (10,007 ft / 3,050 m).
At Choquequirao, we explore Inca terraces, plazas, ceremonial architecture and water channels. Your guide explains the site's history and highlights the extraordinary Llamas of the Sun stone mosaics. The areas visited depend on trail and site access on the day.
After our visit and lunch, we return to Marampata for dinner and our second camping night.
DAY 3 OF 4
Retrace the Apurímac Canyon trail, passing Santa Rosa and the river crossing before climbing to Chiquisca.
We leave Marampata (9,514 ft / 2,900 m) after breakfast and descend through the canyon toward Santa Rosa (6,463 ft / 1,970 m). Here we may learn about local sugarcane traditions, including Cambray, a regional cane spirit, if conditions and the day's schedule allow.
We continue down to Playa Rosalinas (4,921 ft / 1,500 m) beside the Apurímac River, the lowest point on the trek, before climbing to Chiquisca (6,234 ft / 1,900 m). The valley can be warm, so carry sufficient water and sun protection in your daypack.
Our cooks prepare dinner at camp, where we spend the final night of the trek.
DAY 4 OF 4
Make the final climb to Capuliyoc and finish with a traditional Pachamanca before returning to Cusco.
After an early breakfast in Chiquisca (6,234 ft / 1,900 m), we climb back toward Capuliyoc (9,482 ft / 2,890 m), with final views across the Apurímac Canyon. The uphill return is a fitting finish to four active days on the trail.
At the end of the walking route, the program features Pachamanca, a traditional Andean meal prepared using heated stones and ingredients such as potatoes, corn, fava beans and meat. We then say goodbye to our trekking team and travel by road back to Cusco, where we drop you off at your hotel.

I have another question ↗This four-day trek takes you from Cusco into the Apurímac Canyon to the remote Inca site of Choquequirao and back. You hike on all four days, explore the archaeological park with your guide and spend three nights camping. It does not include a visit to Machu Picchu.
The route is challenging because of its long descents into the canyon and sustained climbs back toward Marampata and Capuliyoc. Although individual stages may be described as moderate, the combined four-day effort requires good stamina, particularly on steep, uneven trails.
The daily distances in our four-day itinerary add up to approximately 27.3 miles (44 km): 9.3 miles (15 km), 6.2 miles (10 km), 6.8 miles (11 km) and 5.0 miles (8 km). Actual walking distances may vary slightly with campsite allocation and trail conditions.
The highest point on the walking route is around 10,007 ft (3,050 m) at Choquequirao. The trail starts at Capuliyoc, around 9,482 ft (2,890 m), descends to Playa Rosalinas at roughly 4,921 ft (1,500 m) and then climbs toward Marampata and the ruins. These steep elevation changes are a major part of the trek's difficulty.
You'll camp at Santa Rosa after Day 1, Marampata after Day 2 and Chiquisca after Day 3. We provide the camping equipment and trekking team, and we'll confirm your campsite arrangements before departure.
No. This itinerary visits Choquequirao Archaeological Park and returns to Cusco via Capuliyoc. It does not include Machu Picchu or the Inca Trail. We also offer a separate Choquequirao to Machu Picchu 7-day trek for travelers interested in both sites.
During the guided visit, you can see Inca terraces, plazas, ceremonial areas and water channels, as well as the celebrated Llamas of the Sun stone mosaics where access allows. Your guide explains the archaeological setting and the site’s relationship to the wider Inca world.
Choquequirao is reached by a demanding multi-day hike rather than a direct train-and-bus visit, so it generally receives fewer visitors than Machu Picchu. We cannot promise an empty archaeological site, but the remote canyon approach is a defining part of the experience.
Your trek includes a guide, cooking team, mule support for up to 15.4 lb (7 kg) of personal belongings, three camping nights, the Choquequirao entrance fee, specified meals and transfers between Cusco and the trailhead. The first breakfast, final dinner, rentals and personal expenses are not included.
The price varies with the number of travelers booked together. Rates are US$559 per person for 2–3 travelers, US$545 for 4–5, US$429 for 6–7, US$409 for 8–9 and US$400 for 10. We will confirm your final total and availability before booking.
Departures require a minimum of two travelers. If you are traveling alone, contact us about existing departures or arrangements that may involve an additional supplement. We will explain the available options and any cost before you commit to the reservation.
We organize departures for small parties of up to ten travelers. Depending on reservations, your departure may include other travelers or consist only of your own companions. Having only your party on a departure is possible, but it is not automatically guaranteed as a private-service booking.
Yes. Regular hiking, stairs and hill walks will help prepare you for multiple days of sustained climbs and descents. Train with the weight you expect to carry in your daypack, and be comfortable walking on uneven ground before attempting this demanding canyon route.
We recommend at least two days in Cusco before the trek, especially if you arrive from a low-altitude destination. Acclimatization reduces some risks but cannot prevent every altitude-related problem. If you have medical concerns, consult a qualified healthcare professional before traveling.
The drier months, broadly May through September, are generally preferred for hiking the canyon. Rain and trail conditions still vary, and the route includes hot, exposed sections as well as cooler camping areas. Bring rain protection and confirm trail access before your departure.
Our muleteers and pack animals carry the included camping equipment and up to 15.4 lb (7 kg) of your personal belongings on the supported trekking stages. Keep water, sun protection, medication and other essentials in your own daypack.
We include three trail lunches, three breakfasts, three dinners and three afternoon snacks. A Pachamanca meal is also scheduled for the final day; our team can clarify the meal arrangements before you book. Treated drinking water is provided after the first four hours of Day 1.
We can prepare vegetarian or vegan options when notified in advance. Tell us about your preferences and any food allergies at booking so we can plan with the trekking cook and discuss any limitations before departure.
Please describe your allergy, its severity and the emergency medication you carry before booking. Our team needs this information to discuss whether the remote trekking conditions are suitable. Because this trek travels through remote areas, we cannot accept travelers with life-threatening allergies. Please discuss your circumstances with our team before making payment.
Trekking poles are strongly recommended for the steep descents and long climbs of the Apurímac Canyon. They can help with balance and reduce stress on your legs. You may bring your own or rent poles through Waman Adventures.
Most hotels in Cusco can hold extra luggage while you are away. If yours cannot, ask our team about storing your unnecessary bags at our office. Keep valuables and essential documents with you.
Yes. Admission to Choquequirao Archaeological Park is included in this tour. Your guide will accompany you through the visit, with the specific areas explored depending on the site’s current access arrangements.
Use the booking links in the Prices section or contact our team with your preferred dates and number of travelers. We will check the departure, explain the applicable per-person rate and confirm the reservation terms before payment.
Yes. For more time at the archaeological park, consider our five-day Choquequirao trek. If you want a longer route connecting the two sites, see our Choquequirao to Machu Picchu trek. Each itinerary has different inclusions and walking stages.
