Itinerary

DAY 1: WELCOME – PUERTO MALDONADO – CAIMAN OXBOW

Highlight of the day: Discover the amazing life of caimans and explore their habitat full of riverine life.

Ciudad Puerto Maldonado Cocha Caiman - Puerto Maldonado

We start this special tour by picking you up from the airport or hotel and then heading towards the Capitanía port. During this trip, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the beautiful city of Puerto Maldonado, known as the biodiversity capital of Peru.

Do you like rivers? Upon reaching the port, we will embark on a journey along the Madre de Dios river for about 30 km to reach our lodge. Get your camera ready! During our journey, you will be able to admire the local flora and fauna, including colorful plants and flowers, and possibly spot animals such as capybaras, caimans, river turtles, herons, cormorants, and various birds of prey and scavengers.

We arrive at our lodge, Eco Amazonia Lodge, where we will settle in and enjoy a delicious lunch to recharge our energy for the afternoon activities.

In the afternoon, we will walk towards Cocha Caimán. Do you enjoy jungle hikes? This entire trail is an interpretive path properly marked. We will reach Cocha Caimán, where we will have the opportunity to see the fearsome Black and White Caimans, known for being efficient predators in their natural habitat full of aquatic fauna.

After admiring the wildlife in this wonderful place, we will return to our lodge, where a delicious dinner awaits us.

Do you want to have a good time? The lodge has a bar and a board game room where you can relax and enjoy while the nocturnal wildlife accompanies us with songs and sounds from various species.

  • Meals: 1 lunch and 1 dinner.
  • Accommodation: Eco Amazonia Lodge.
DAY 2: LAKE APU VICTOR – MONKEY ISLAND

Highlight of the day: Discover the wonderful flora and fauna of Lake Apu Victor and our friends waiting for us on Monkey Island.

Lago Apu Victor - Puerto Maldonado Isla de los Monos - Puerto Maldonado

Today, everyone will wake up by listening to the Red Howler Monkeys and motmots. We will have breakfast at our lodge with typical local ingredients. Ready? We will begin our walk into the deep forest. Can I get lost? Difficult, all trails are properly marked and well-maintained. So during the walk, we will cross Terra Firme forest and descend into flooded forests towards Lake Apu Victor. The best is observing and learning about fruit, forest, and medicinal trees that support animals and communities in the Amazon forests. Notable among these are aguaje, mahogany, Brazil nut, catahua, cedar, cetico, copaiba, and shihuahuaco.

Stay still! We will get chances to spot some wild animals while walking, but we must remain calm and relatively silent to see them, such as the Lowland Tapir and the Collared Peccary; rodents like the giant otter, capybara, agouti, and armadillo; primates like the howler monkey, Black-Capped Squirrel Monkey, and capuchin monkey; reptiles like the iguana and the bushmaster; amphibians like the toad and birds like the guan, the tinamou, the golden parakeet, and the Blue-and-yellow Macaw.

We arrive at Lake Apu Victor, where immense swamps and giant trees await us. This place has an Amazonian lookout (a huge observation platform) from which we will enjoy a panoramic view over the lake, observing parrots, macaws, toucans, Southern Screamers, Hoatzins, herons, and other animals like caimans, etc. Additionally, there are other fauna species associated with the lake, such as the Yellow-footed Tortoise, the Matamata Turtle, the Twisted-necked Turtle, and the Giant Otters of the Amazon rainforest.

After our activity, we will return to our lodge, where a delicious lunch awaits us to recover and be up for our next excursion. In the afternoon, we start walking out again. Would you like to join us? The journey will be short towards Monkey Island. This place owns a wide variety of exuberant flora that houses numerous primate species, such as the Spider Monkey, Capuchin Monkey, Squirrel Monkey, and Tamarin Monkey. Additionally, we will find other small mammal species like the Ring-tailed Coati (Nasua), squirrels, and a wide variety of birds. Load your camera up! We will return to our lodge with the farewell of a beautiful sunset and the falling sun. Our dinner and rest for the next day await us.

  • Meals: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, and 1 dinner.
  • Accommodation: Eco Amazonia Lodge.
DAY 3: COCHA PERDIDA OBXOW LAKE

Highlight of today: Discover the Wonders of the Lost Lake and the Mysterious Plant or Tree of Life

Cocha perdida - Puerto Maldonado COCHA PERDIDA

We start the day deeply connected with nature and a good breakfast at our Eco Amazonia Lodge restaurant. Are you up? We will continue our journey in the Peruvian jungle.

We will head to Lost Lake. While walking, we will be surrounded by fruits, forests, vine tangles and medicinal trees. Are you always lucky? The luck you have will play a big role by giving you chances to spot various animal species we may encounter on our journey, such as the Jaguar or Ocelot, the Lowland Tapir or Capybara; highlights like the Giant Otter and the Giant Armadillo; primates like the Red Howler Monkey and the Squirrel Monkey; reptiles like the Iguana and the poisonous Bushmaster; amphibians like the toad and birds like the Spix’s Guan, the Undulated Tinamou, amazonian parrots and the Blue-and-yellow Macaw. Do you know the Aguajales?

They are very important in the jungle, considered the plant of mystery or tree of life, accompanying us throughout our journey.

After venturing through the Amazon trail, we will reach the Cocha Perdida Oxbow Lake and ascend a huge observation platform. From this lookout, you can appreciate the vast area this magical place covers, where you can see two types of aguaje trees: dense and mixed. We will explore around the lake, and if luck is on our side, we will spot the giant otter, the largest of its kind and one of the most impressive animals of the Amazon, before returning to our lodge to recharge with a delicious lunch.

Do you still have energy? You have the entire afternoon for yourself, which you can use to take photos around the Eco Amazonia Lodge, visit the botanical garden, and observe the flora and fauna of the area. At night, our dinner awaits us. If you still have energy, we have a bar and a game room where you can have fun and spend pleasant moments with your party of friends or family.

  • Meals: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, and 1 dinner.
  • Accommodation: Eco Amazonia Lodge.
