DAY 1: WELCOME – PUERTO MALDONADO – CAIMAN LAKE

Highlight of the Day: Discover the incredible biodiversity at the shore of the Madre de Dios River.

Albergue Ecoamazonia - Puerto Maldonado Rio Madre de Dios - Fauna

We begin this wonderful 5-day Tambopata tour with a warm welcome and pick-up from the airport or hotel to get to the Capitania port. During this journey, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the beautiful city of Puerto Maldonado, known as the biodiversity capital of Peru.

Do you like sailing? Upon arriving at the port, we will embark on a trip along the Madre de Dios river for 30 km until we reach our lodge. Get your camera ready! During our journey, you will be able to admire the local flora and fauna, such as colorful plants as well as the possibility of observing animals such as capybaras, caimans, river turtles, herons, cormorants, scavenger birds and others.

We arrive at our lodge, Eco Amazonia Lodge, where we will settle in and enjoy a delicious lunch to recharge our energies for the afternoon.

In the afternoon, we will go towards Caiman Lake. Do you like walking? We’ll enter into well-marked interpretive trails to get to Caiman Lake, where we will have the opportunity to see the fearsome Black and White Caimans, known for being efficient predators in their natural habitat.

After admiring the fauna this wonderful place offers us, we will return to our lodge, where a delicious dinner awaits us.

Want to enjoy more? The lodge has a bar and a game room to relax and enjoy while the nocturnal fauna accompanies us with frog songs and other nocturnal animals.

  • Meals: 01 lunch and 01 dinner.
  • Overnight: Eco Amazonia Lodge.
DAY 2: APU VICTOR LAKE – MONKEY ISLAND

Highlight of the Day: Amaze the flora and fauna on Apu Victor Lake and interact with our monkey friends on Monkey Island.

Lago Apu Victor - Puerto Maldonado Isla de los Monos - Puerto Maldonado

We start our day by listening to the Red Howler Monkey’s calls, waking us up for the day. We will eat breakfast at our lodge. Ready? We will begin to walk into the deep forest’s trails. Can I get lost? No, the trail is well-marked and maintained. Along the way, we will traverse Terra Firme and descend towards the secondary forests heading to Apu Victor Lake.

The best is witnessing tall trees, forests, and some medicinal plants, which the Amazonian dwellers consumed. These include aguaje, mahogany, brazilian nut, catahua, cedar, cético, copaiba, and shihuahuaco.

Stay still! During the journey, we may spot some animals, but we must remain calm and relatively quiet to see and not scare them, such as the Lowland Tapir and the Collared Peccary; mammals like the Giant Otter, capybaras, Ring-tailed Agouti, and Nine-banded Armadillo; primates like the Red Howler Monkey, Black-headed Capuchin Monkey and the most common Squirrel Monkey; reptiles like iguanas and the poisonous Fer-de-lance viper snake; amphibians like toads, frogs and birds like the Razor-billed Currasow, Undulated Tinamou, Amazonian Parrolets, and the Scarlet Macaw.

We arrive at Apu Victor Lake, which is surrounded by palm trees, water lilies and grass on the shores.

This place has an Amazonian lookout (a large canopy tower) from which we will enjoy a panoramic view over the lake, observing parrots, macaws, toucans, camungos, hoatzins, herons, and other animals such as caimans, turtles, etc. Additionally, there are other species of fauna associated with the lake, such as the Yellow-footed Tortoise, Mata Mata Turtle, Twist-neck Turtle, anhinga, squirrel, Red Brocket Deer, agouti, and otters of the Amazon jungle.

After our activity, we will return to our lodge, where a delicious lunch awaits us to recover and be ready for our next excursion on our 5-day Tambopata tour. In the afternoon, we start walking again. Will you join us? The distance will be short, heading to Monkey Island. This isle houses biodiversity but especially monkeys, so among them are the Black Spider Monkey, Humbolt’s Squirrel Monkey, Red Howler monkey, and pygmy marmosets. Additionally, we will find other species of small mammals like the coati, squirrel, and a huge variety of colorful birds. Get your camera ready! We will return to our lodge with the farewell of a beautiful sunset and the setting sun. Our dinner and rest await us for the next day.

  • Meals: 01 breakfast, 01 lunch, and 01 dinner.
  • Overnight: Eco Amazonia Lodge.
DAY 3: COCHA PERDIA OXBOW LAKE

Highlight of the Day: Get ready to discover Cocha Perdida oxbow lake and the famous giant otter.

Cocha perdida - Puerto Maldonado Jardin Botanico - Puerto Maldonado

We start super connected with nature and have a good breakfast at our Eco Amazonia Lodge. Ready? We will continue our journey in the Peruvian jungle.

We will head to the Cocha Perdida Oxbow Lake. As we walk, we will be surrounded by fruit vines, forest, and medicinal plants. Do you have you are a lucky person? You must have luck if you want to spot various species of animals that we may find on our journey, such as the jaguar, ocelot, tapir, and peccary; highlights like the giant otter, capybara and armadillo; primates like the monkeys; reptiles like iguanas and snakes; amphibians like toads and birds like curassows, tinamous, toucans, and the spectacular macaws.

Do you know about aguajales? They are highly important trees in the Amazonian ecosystem, considered the plant of mystery or the tree of life, accompanying us throughout our journey.

After venturing through the jungle, we will arrive at the Cocha Perdida Oxbow Lake and ascend to a high canopy tower. From this lookout, we can see the vast canopy of the trees, where you can appreciate two types of aguajales: dense and mixed. We will explore around the lake and, if luck is on our side, we will spot the giant otter one more time, the largest of its kind and one of the most impressive animals in the Amazon. We will then return to our lodge to recover our energies.

Still have energy? You have the entire afternoon free, and you can take the opportunity to take photographs around the Eco Amazonia Lodge, visit the botanical garden, and observe something else. Dinner awaits us in the evening. If you still have energy, we have a bar and a game room where you can have fun and spend pleasant moments with your friends or family party.

  • Meals: 01 breakfast, 01 lunch, and 01 dinner.
  • Overnight: Eco Amazonia Lodge.
DAY 4: GAMITANA RIVER – SPORT FISHING

Highlight of the Day: Be ready to practice sport fishing and take a dip into the Gamitana River.

Rio Gamitana o Briolo Pesca artesanal - Puerto Maldonado
