FAQ

Do I need prior birdwatching experience?

In general, no. This tour is designed for both beginners and experienced birders: your guide helps you spot species, understand behaviors, and make the most of the day’s observation points based on the chosen route.

Is this tour physically demanding?

No, it is an easy tour. Depending on the day’s route, we prioritize accessible stops and viewpoints, without long walks or technical sections. If you are a beginner or traveling with children or older adults, what usually matters most is moving at a comfortable pace and managing exposure to sun and cold.

What altitude is the tour at, and how does it affect me?

This experience takes place at high altitude. Cusco sits at around 11,152 feet (3,399 m) and, depending on the stops, you may be close to or above that range. If you are sensitive to altitude or just arrived in Cusco, it is generally best to acclimatize for 1–2 days, stay well hydrated, and keep an easy pace during stops.

What kind of weather should I expect during the tour?

It depends on the season. In general, May through October tends to be drier, with sunny days and cold early hours; from November through April, the likelihood of rain increases. In any month, at altitude it is normal to feel quick temperature changes between sun, wind, and shade.

What is the best season to see birds and hummingbirds?

In general, birdwatching is possible year-round. During the dry months, visibility is often better; during the rainy months, the landscape is greener. For hummingbirds in specialized gardens like Ensifera Camp, activity is usually steady, although a specific species cannot be guaranteed.

Which birds are most likely on this route (Chacán, Huaypo, and Ensifera Camp)?

Depending on the day’s route, the Chacán reservoir area and parts of the Sacred Valley offer opportunities to observe high-Andean birds. At Ensifera Camp, the main focus is hummingbirds, with strong chances to see several species. The Sword-billed Hummingbird is one of the site’s signature species, although sightings depend on natural conditions.

What time does the tour run, and how long does it last?

Total duration is approximately 6 hours, including transfers and stops. The order of visits may be adjusted based on light, weather, and bird activity to optimize the experience.

Does it include pickup from my hotel in Cusco?

Yes. Private transportation with pickup and drop-off is included for hotels located in Cusco’s Historic Center. For accommodations outside this area, we will coordinate a meeting point.

What clothing and gear do you recommend bringing?

We recommend dressing in layers and bringing sun protection, a light waterproof layer during the rainy season, a small daypack, a camera, and personal medications. A warm hat and an extra insulating layer can be helpful in windy areas.

Can I take good hummingbird photos at Ensifera Camp?

Yes. Because it is a specialized garden, there are often opportunities for close-range photography. Your guide can suggest the best spots to observe and photograph without disturbing the birds or other visitors.

Can I rent binoculars?

Yes. Binoculars can be rented in advance, subject to availability. If you already have your own, we recommend bringing them.
